At the Shulamith School for Girls in Cedarhurst, students begin learning Ivrit in preschool and strengthen their Hebrew language abilities throughout their years in school.
In addition to teaching a third grade class, Morah Rivka Holzman is the Hebrew curriculum coordinator for grades one through four. Under her direction, students entered a contest run by author Rika Berkowitz, in memory of her Holocaust survivor parents.
Every Shulamith third and fourth grader wrote a story that was entered in the contest. Liana Kollander and Leora Herrmann received a special mention and fourth grader Bracha Kupchik won a first place award.
Reknowned author Shoshana Vegh visited the school on Yom Hazikaron and presented Bracha with a first-place certificate. Bracha’s story about a magic snowman will be published in a book which will be given to all winners in a grand ceremony in June.
