HAFTR students in grades 1-8 will be required to wear a school uniform come September 2009.

“We believe that this change will [build] a sense of belonging, fostering a sense of pride and enhancing the religious environment in our school,” said Rabbi David Leibtag, HAFTR’s head of school, in a letter to parents.

The new dress code is being instituted after a survey of parents indicated 70 percent would prefer a school uniform.

Parts of the uniform will have to be purchased from a designated vendor who is yet to be determined. The uniform guidelines include white or navy polos with the HAFTR logo –– long or short-sleeved –– for all students.

Boys will have the option to wear a white button down oxford with a navy logo. Pants can be navy or khaki chino and can be purchased from any vendor. Cargo pockets or writing of any sort are prohibited.

Girls’ skirts will be navy or khaki, either pleated or A-line, and must be purchased from the vendor. Optional sweaters or hoodless track jackets will also be available from the vendor.

Though parents are required to purchase the clothing — at least for the inaugural year of the policy — the school plans establish a uniform exchange program to allow families to donate or trade uniforms from year to year.

“Our students should dress in a manner that reflects dignity and modesty,” Rabbi Leibtag explained. “As society continues to change the norms of dress, it is important that we give a clear message of what is appropriate.”
