A Five Towns institution is getting a new chapter as Woodmere Lanes, the bowling center that has been a fixture on Broadway since 1960, has been purchased by a religious Jewish owner and is reopening under kosher supervision. Mellow Yellow, the Israeli/Mediterranean spot on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, has gained kosher supervision from Rav Asher Schechter. The menu features Israeli and Mediterranean favorites including shakshuka, hummus masabacha, hummus sabich, a sabich sandwich, green omelette sandwich and Jerusalem plate. There are also crispy pita za’atar with labane cheese, tomato and za’atar, avocado toast, bourekas, smoothies and an extensive coffee and tea selection.

Kosher lands at London airports
Kosher travelers flying through London are getting a new option, with kosher sandwiches now available at London Luton and London Stansted airports. The development gives kosher travelers another way to grab food while traveling through two of London’s major airports, particularly useful for those flying from airports that have historically had limited kosher choices.
The new sandwich options expand the availability of kosher grab-and-go food for travelers. For those connecting through Luton or Stansted, having a packaged kosher sandwich available at the airport can be considerably more convenient than arranging food in advance or relying on options after leaving the airport.
Agri Star returning
There is some encouraging news from Agri Star Meat & Poultry in Postville, Iowa, following the devastating July fire that destroyed much of the kosher meat-processing facility. The company is hopeful of resuming limited production this week, pending completion of required inspections, and has begun bringing employees back.
The fire destroyed approximately 75% of the facility and left more than 600 employees without work. Agri Star is one of the largest kosher meat processors in the United States, making the plant’s reopening particularly significant for the kosher meat supply. While rebuilding the facility will take time, the start of limited production represents an important first step toward restoring normal operations.
Rockland bros take Empire Award
Brothers Mendy and Shaya Setton, the owners behind Rockland County’s The Diner and Pies n’ Fries, have been honored with the Empire Award by New York State Senator Bill Weber. The award recognizes businesses for entrepreneurship, economic activity and contributions to their communities.
The Settons opened The Diner in Pomona earlier this year in the former Mount Ivy All American Diner, creating a family-friendly kosher restaurant built around the feel of a classic American diner. They also operate two Pies n’ Fries locations in Rockland County. The award recognizes their growing presence in the county’s kosher restaurant scene and their continued investment in the local community.
