National Shabbat

Trump calls for Jewish Americans to observe a ‘national Sabbath’

President Trump wants America to unplug — and light candles.

In a surprise Jewish American Heritage Month proclamation, Trump called on Jews nationwide to observe a “national Sabbath” from sundown May 15 to nightfall May 16 as part of the country’s 250th anniversary celebration.

The president framed the initiative as a moment of prayer, gratitude and national reflection, inviting Americans “of all backgrounds” to join in honoring the Jewish tradition of Shabbat.

Jewish leaders quickly embraced the unusual gesture.

Aish chief Rabbi Steven Burg said the call shifts attention away from nonstop antisemitism and toward Jewish spiritual pride.

Agudath Israel’s Rabbi A.D. Motzen dubbed it “Shabbos 250,” calling it a powerful reminder of the religious freedom Jews enjoy in America.

Others called the proclamation historic, noting that earlier generations of observant Jews were often forced to choose between Sabbath observance and keeping their jobs.

Now a US president is publicly urging the opposite.

In a year filled with anti-Jewish tension, Trump is betting one weekend of rest can send a louder message.
