To the editor,
Regarding Alyza Lewin’s article, “Fighting back against Jew-hatred on campus,” in The Jewish Star on July 10.
A college student asked me what to do if he disagrees with a professor teaching a required course in history or sociology who is touting anti-Zionist propaganda, I told him not to challenge him verbally or in writing because he will be punished.
Even if he writes a letter to the professor after the semester challenging his views, the professor could write a report to the administration that could be used against the student in future classes. If the student seeks references from his college upon graduation, any positive references may not be provided. Students require references for application to graduate schools.
Alyza Lewin’s advice to document is sound and from a lawyer’s perspective makes perfect sense. However, the college administrators are wimps (weak individuals managing people) and have been subject to the leftist teachings of Howard Zinn. This scenario is all part of the dumbing down of America described in many books.
We don’t have strong college administrators who can defend statues of imperfect founding fathers, insist on allowing lectures by conservative speakers, can challenge antisemitic professors by presenting alternative views, and defend free-speech with real action. Strong college administrators would make Alyza’s sound advice unnecessary.
