Rabbi archeologist speaks

YOUNG ISRAEL OF WOODMERE, located at 859 Peninsula Boulevard in Woodmere is hosting Rabbi Yonatan Adler, as its scholar-in-residence. Rabbi Adler is a professor and archeologist at Bar Ilan University. Rabbi Adler will be speaking before minchah at 5 p.m. on “Rashi vs. Rabbenu Tam controversy,” in light of ancient tefilin discovered in the Judean Desert. Between Mincha and Maariv, Rabbi Adler will address the question whether archeological evidence can be used in the halachic decision-making process. For more information, contact 516-295-0950.

YOUNG ISRAEL OF JAMAICA ESTATES, located at 83-10 188 Street in Jamaica Estates will present a special program focusing on the challenges involved with balancing the needs of children, grandchildren, and parents. The event is sponsored by National Council of Young Israel and Ohel Children’s Home & Family Services. The presentation will be given by Harriet Blank, LCSW, the Intake Coordinator and Geriatric Mental Health Program Coordinator for Ohel. Jewish sports stars honored

JEWISH SPORTS HALL OF FAME & MUSEUM, located within the Suffolk Y JCC at 74 Hauppauge Road in Commack will be holding its annual induction ceremony. This year’s honorees are San Francisco 49s offensive lineman Harris Barton, Israeli basketball sensation Tal Brody, 2010 Olympic bobsleigh champ Steve Mesler, and renowned swimming instructor Jane Katz. This year’s outstanding college athletes are Loran Galler Rabinowitz, an ice dancer who studies at Harvard; and University of Wisconsin football star Gabe Carimi.
