Woodmere woman creates a sheitel shlepping fix

Gloria Davidson of Woodmere found traveling with her long sheitel to be so difficult, she decided to do something about it.

No more arriving at a hotel or friend’s home with only a closet doorknob, blade of a ceiling fan, or lamp to rest your wig on. The Destination Wig travel stand, introduced to the market just after Pesach this year, is a perfect solution.

“If you have a longer wig, like I do,” said Davidson, “there was nothing out there that held it firmly or kept the style. I needed something that didn’t bend or topple over, or slip off of!”

Davidson and her partner Iris Roth took two years to engineer and package their wig stand to be extremely light, compact and easy to use. It weighs less than one pound, but is very sturdy.

“We knew it should be plastic,” Davidson said, “so we sought out plastics firms and toured many facilities, to choose the place that would engineer it properly.” The design was refined and improved over time, and the Destination Wig stand is now made in the U.S., patented and trademarked.

“It’s easy to use,” said Davidson. “You build it up with as many pieces as you need, it goes up to 24 inches from the top of the dome to the base, and can be even taller with extra extension pieces. It’s perfect to travel with, small enough to slip into your handbag or carry-on, and comes with its own tote bag.”

“This really came about out of need. I love my long sheitels and knew there must be many other women as frustrated as I was,” she said. “There is nothing like this on the market currently: telescoping stands get stuck, and only extend about 12 inches; styrofoam stands fall over and require pins that can damage the interior cap, and crisscross stands just collapse” under the weight of a long wig.

The stand’s base is designed so that the extender pieces can’t get loose, she said. The dome locks in over the extenders when the stand is collapsed, and the hollows in the base can be used to place jewelry or hair clips and accessories when the stand is set up.
