Sanctity of life

The Yeshiva University Medical Ethics Society is holding its third annual conference on Sunday, Sept. 14. The title is, "Sanctity of Life: A Jewish Approach to End of Life Challenges." The conference will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m., the program begins at 9:15 a.m. and continues until 3:00 p.m.

Topics to be addressed include pediatric and adult end of life challenges, health care proxies, assisted suicide and the value of life, and hospice care and pain management. Scheduled keynote speakers include Rabbi Dr. Richard Weiss, Dr. Beth Popp, Dr. Tia Powell, Dr. Stuart Greenstein, Rabbi Dr. Moshe Tendler, Dr. David Pelcovitz, Rabbi Kenneth Brander, Rabbi Mordechai Willig and Rabbi Dr. Edward Reichman.

West Hempstead - The JCC of West Hempstead will host a Klezmer concert on Motza'ei Shabbos, September 13, at 8:30 p.m., featuring Margot Leverett and The Klezmer Mountain Boys. Thursday, September 25 will be a lecture about "Life on the International Space Station" with Tom Gwyne, VP for programming at the Cradle of Aviation, discussing a history of the U.S. Space program, including the challenges astronauts face on long duration space missions. Hewlett - The Hewlett House offers free ongoing cancer support groups and classes. Cedarhurst - Every Tuesday, the JCC of the Greater Five Towns offers a social day program called "Remember When" from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Sons of Israel in Woodmere. This program is especially designed for memory enhancement and socialization. The cost includes a full range of therapeutic activities, morning beverage, dessert, and a kosher lunch. Round-trip door-to-door handicapped accessible transportation is available on a limited basis. Registration is limited to ensure maximum benefits to each participant.
