Publishing a newspaper that strives to be truthful, fair and compassionate is difficult enough; publishing an Orthodox newspaper that is commited to walking the Halachic straight and narrow is an additional challenge.

We work hard, pretty close to 24/6, but are far from perfect. Both your criticisms and cheers are welcomed and thoughtfully considered; many of your suggestions help to make us better.

Since I began my tenure as publisher of The Jewish Star over one year ago, I’ve been regularly heartened by the warm reception given to me in our communities, and by how many people have told me of The Star’s valued role.

The Star has recently grown in size by 50 percent; at the same time, we’ve worked to continue to improve our product, emphasizing local news in addition to words of Torah and news highlights from Israel and around the Jewish world.

My background is in community journalism — I published The Brooklyn Paper for 30 years before selling it to NewsCorp. in 2009. My goal at The Star is to grow the best possible newspaper in the service of the frum communities on Long Island.

And I invite your help in doing so.

Let me know what you’d like to see included in our pages, and we’ll do our best. We invite press releases, photos, letters and op-eds, and will dispatch our professional staff to report on as many events as possible. Our advertising content has increased greatly in recent weeks, and we hope that this endorsement of our efforts by our communities’ businesses and institutions will continue in the new year.

One of my favorite tasks each week is assemblying the “Star Flashback” column that appears on the right side of this page. The Jewish Star’s focus has evolved over its 12 years, but many of the stories we covered throughout are still relevant today.
