I Know A Guy, for 10 years

If you’ve been keeping an eye on Avi Ackerman since he started his business in 2006, you’ve likely noticed how quickly he’s become the go-to general contractor in the Five Towns.

Over a decade, he’s done as much work building local businesses and contributing to our shopping and dining experiences, as he’s done with private homes.

Twenty stores are the result of I Know A Guy’s efforts, including the new Amsterdam Burgers restaurant, Sushi Toyko, Xaga Sushi, Off the Wall Frozen Yogurt, and Mike’s Bistro’s Manhattan outpost, along with stores like Fame, David Desso Jewelry, and Savvy Sheek. He is currently working on the new Everfresh kosher supermarket in Great Neck and a kosher supermarket in Staten Island.

As a lifelong Five Towns resident, Ackerman’s holistic approach to both residential and commercial construction makes perfect sense. Born in Lawrence and now living and working in Cedarhurst, Ackerman is the beneficiary of our community’s appealing growth as much as the rest of us.

So it’s no surprise that I Know A Guy was presented with a Best Contractor in Cedarhurst award last September.

The prize thanked his “exceptional local company that has enhanced the positive image of small businesses, and made Cedarhurst a great place to live, work and play.”

I Know A Guy’s reputation for reliability and on-time performance is matched by a high level of empathy and assistance for local homeowners when they desperately need a hand. The experience of Anne Walllisever after Hurricane Sandy is an excellent example.

Five rooms in Wallisever’s home sustained serious water damage and a new boiler and hot water tank were required for the family to return to living in their home. Although she had not known Ackerman before then, the I Know A Guy name was at the top of her mind, from seeing his trucks and signs around town for many years.
