The Jewish Star looks back over 12 years

FLASHBACK: This week past

Posted

2002 — The Jewish Center of Atlantic Beach named Rabbi Samuel Kilbanoff as its spiritual leader. Rabbi Kilbanoff discussed with The Jewish Star the diverse yet close-knif Orthodox community he would be serving. “There is one service, no early, no late. Just one, that’s it.”

2003 — To celebrate The Star’s first anniversary, Brach’s awarded customers several $52 gift certificates.

2004 — Agudath Israel’s public affairs director Rabbi Avi Shafran, in his regular Jewish Star column, concludes, “This season of the Jewish year, our tradition teaches, is particularly fertile for making choices, for embarking on new roads. All we need are the sensitivity and wisdom to be open to crucial opportunities [and] make choices that will change our lives and our futures for the holier.”

2005 — In a front page column, Alan Jay Gerber considers little known facts about Holocaust-era words and actions of Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and former Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern’s. LaGuardia’s sister Gemma, who was living in Europe, was taken prisoner and held for ransom by the Nazis

2006 — Deja vu all over again? This week’s lead: “Busing Bedlam Opens School Year; Are Public School Cuts Affective Privzte School Bus Routes?” Inside, an editorial titled “Trust, But Verify,” discusses news from Monsey where “chickens sold as kosher (Chasidishe shechitah, no less) were really not kosher, at all.”
