Shulamith girls bring smiles to hospital

Posted

With each grade in Shulamith School for Girls “adopting” different chessed organizations to support, the fifth grade jumped on the bandwagon by establishing Ten Chiyuch in conjunction with the Bikur Cholim of Mount Sinai South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside.

Students from the Cedarhurst school got right to work when they were invited to a special Veterans Day ceremony at the hospital on Nov. 8. The girls gathered at the home of a student, Chana Rubin, to make up bags and cards for the veterans who are employed or volunteer at the hospital.

Four students were chosen to represent the group at the commemoration ceremony: Gila Feigenbaum, Evie Miller, Malka Schlossberg, and Tehila Wachsler. It was standing-room only at the ceremony and when the girls were called up they received a loud round of applause. School representative Miriam Agular addressed the crowd, explaining that part of Shulamith’s education is teaching the students about hakarat hatov.

The ceremony was impactful as each veteran was applauded as he or she stood up to represent their division. At the conclusion, the Ten Chiyuch representatives distributed their bags to the brave men and women who served our country.

The girls made quite an impression and left forever changed as well.
