Going for the Gold on Oscar night

Posted

On Sunday night, 34.3 million viewers tuned in to view the 2016 Academy Awards. And as I do each year, I tuned in as well. The show tends to be about two hours too long and 90 percent of the awards everyone cares about are presented in the last five minutes, but it’s a ritual that brings back old Hollywood glamour.

There is glitz and glam, sequins and satin, and haute couture. Oh, and jewels, let’s not forget those jewels, most of which are on loan from Harry Winston. Not sure why they have to be on loan, as the actresses wearing them are millionaires many times over. The rest of us plain folk should get a shot at wearing some of those pieces. Hey Harry, my daughter’s wedding is coming up this summer. Just saying.

As usual, this year, there were elegant gowns, embellished gowns, some too bright, some too dull, some too tight — and then there were those that were barely there, as in dangerously plunging neck lines. Maybe it’s a good showcase for those jewels on loan, but better they should get some extra material on loan and cover up a bit.

Cate Blanchett looked like she went wild in Michael’s with flowers and feathers taking over her gown. Lady Gaga won most improved, no more meat dresses and matching hats for her!

Actors got noticed as well. Jared Leto, what were you thinking with that lapel flower bow tie?

But enough about the red carpet. Let’s move on to the nominees and the awards.

My favorite movie this year, was, “The Danish Girl.” My husband Jerry hated it. He said he would rather see “men” movies, not men turning into women movies. The subject matter was a bit too much for him. I asked him “how is it, that you can watch Gladiator, There Will be Blood,” “Full Metal Jacket,” No Country For Old Men” and “Pulp Fiction,” and not be able to stomach “The Danish Girl”?
