Why is it that some things that seem so straightforward to me seem so difficult for others — and by others, in this instance, I’m talking about none other than my husband Jerry. It’s not that he’s incapable of following directions. His partners tell me all the time how brilliant he is. So why is it so difficult for him to press DVR, choose whichever show I taped for him (Giants, usually) and press “start from the beginning.” After making him do it on his own a few times, he finally got the hang of it. Jerry likes familiarity and would rather not deal with anything tech. His firm actually keeps a tax law library just for him. Well, you know, you can’t highlight on a computer.

When it comes to the GPS in his car, he feigns ignorance as well. Not that I’m at all tech savvy, but I figured it out. Recently when he was attending a cousin’s wedding in Williamsburg, he asked me to program in the address, which I did. I then explained that all he had to do when he was ready to return home, was to press menu, destinations, previous destinations … and then Home.

All went well. He arrived on schedule — his schedule being two hours late. He had a great time celebrating with his cousins and called me on the way the back. He said that he got there with no problem and it was simple to set the GPS to Home. That was at 10:30 pm. Being I was busy cooking for shabbat lunch company, I wasn’t paying attention to the clock. He walked through the door at 12:30 am. When I realized what time it was, I asked him if he was stuck in terrible traffic, His reply, “No traffic, I was doing really well until Siri stopped talking (he calls every voice Siri). By the time I realized she had stopped speaking, I was in Crown Heights, and then a few other neighborhoods that I have only heard my parents speak about, that they had been in when they first arrived in America.

“I did hear her telling me to make a few turns, then I just continued straight. I was long passed Lubavitch headquarters, when I realized she wasn’t speaking. After a while the neighborhoods began to really deteriorate as well as the roads. Then I tried to follow the map and kept following the winding roads.”
