YI Cedarhurst-Lawrence in firehouse chessed

Posted

Thirty children from the Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst embarked on a chessed mission last Sunday.

Led by Youth Director Alyssa Schechter, they created “thank you” cards at shul and then walked to the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department to deliver their messages of appreciation.

The group was greeted by two firefighters, Andrew Parnes and Noah Kupferstein, who gave their visitors a tour of the firehouse.

The children got to see the inside of the firetrucks, walk through the ambulance, and even try on some of the firefighters’ gear.

“It’s nice to have the children show appreciation and gratitude to the men and women who keep us safe on a daily basis” said one of the group’s mothers, Tamar Scharf.

This particular event, one of many youth programs the Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst organizes throughout the year, is especially important as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches.

After a year in which many service people were at risk doing their jobs, the Young Israel community wanted to show its communal appreciation for their valued service.
