Sephardic Temple dinner offers a really ‘blind date’

Posted

The Jerusalem Institute for the Blind (JIB) will host a “Blind Date Dinner” at the Sephardic Temple in Cedarhurst as part of a series of sensory-awareness experiences developed by JIB to benefit the visually impaired in Israel.

Diners will get a first-hand glimpse into the lives of those who are blind or visually impaired by participating in an unforgettable culinary journey in darkness — safely and comfortably.

As guests arrive for the dinner at 7 pm on motzei Shabbos, Dec. 17, they will be given featherweight blindfolds and guided to their seats where they will be served an exquisite meal prepared by Genadeen Caterers. In the artificial darkness of their blindfolds, guests will allow their remaining senses to be their guides, savoring tastes, aromas, textures and sounds in a way never thought possible.

“Sometimes, to truly open your eyes, you must close them,” explained Leo Brandstatter, executive director of JIB’s U.S. office. “Blind Date and our previous dining experience, Blackout Brunch, were developed to experience the sensory world that lies just beyond our vision. Our guests will participate in a powerful presentation, where sensing is perceiving. We utilize the power of darkness to clear away the expectations created by sight.”

Since 1902, the Jerusalem Institute for the Blind has provided a wide range of educational, rehabilitative, health and social-welfare activities for blind and visually impaired children and youth throughout Israel.
