Judy — not Jerry — is the news on Caribbean cruise

Our columnist finds happy challenges on her Caribbean cruise

Posted

Two weeks ago, my husband Jerry and I embarked on a 10 night cruise to the Caribbean. Aside from loving cruising and being with good friends, I was also looking forward to some creative writing material. Ten days, 30 meals, four islands — if that’s not enough to conjure up a Jerry story, consider this; our ship had simulated skydiving, roller-skating, trapeze lessons, rock-climbing, theaters and much more. There was going to be a Jerry story somewhere!

We were off to Port Liberty, in Bayonne, with our luggage, which consisted of what I would need for 10 days — plus an extra suitcase of “just in case I need” clothes, shoes, etc. As I sat atop one of those suitcases, in the car, I promised myself that next year, I would pack half as much. But then again, I’ve been saying that since I first cruised in 2008.

So there I was, in the car, when I noticed something was missing. I forgot the bag with food we were taking along — the homemade salad dressing and my favorite diet cookies to have with coffee in the morning, my Crystal Light packets to put in the drinking water, and a few other items. We were already behind schedule, and were just past the usual traffic on Rockaway Turnpike. Jerry said he would do without the dressing, I figured I could do without the other stuff. I called my cleaning woman, who was in my house, and told her to put the dressing in the fridge. She said she was about to call me because she noticed we left a small bag that had all my makeup inside.

Needless to say the car made an abrupt about-face. Do you expect a woman my age to go 10 days without makeup?

So, the first issue had to do with me, not Jerry. No story yet.
