The Oceanside retired school teacher has launched her second charity raising cookbook, this one to raise funds for JobKatif. “I made up my mind to do something,” she said.

Well over one thousand people gathered at the New York Hilton this past Sunday for Agudath Israel of America’s annual dinner. Featuring a long list of speakers and presentations, the Dinner paid tribute to various individuals who have made an impact on the community, as well as powerful messages from political and rabbinic leaders.

Rabbi Herschel Schachter, Rabbi Yaakov Neuberger, Rabbi Mordechai Willig, and Rabbi Moshe Tendler, met with the leaders of Calvary recently to learn about the Hospital’s extensive services for Orthodox patients and families in the two inpatient facilities and through Calvary’s Home Hospice.

The care of aging parents, though difficult, is a necessary fact of life and should be approached with a proper attitude and with an understanding of ethics and Jewish law.
In a talk that combined Talmudic and other Jewish legal sources with medical expertise, Rabbi Dr. Aaron Glatt and Rabbi Dr. Richard Weiss discussed “The Circle of Life: Considering the Ethical and Halakhic Parameters of Caring for Aging Parents” this past Sunday at the Young Israel of Woodmere. The program was presented by Yeshiva University’s Student Medical Ethics Society.

This past Sunday, on April 28, Chabad of Five Towns held their 18th annual Lag B’Omer celebration in the Andrew J. Parise Park (formerly Cedarhurst Park). It was open to the entire community, all ages were invited and encouraged to attend. It is estimated that 800- 1,000 people participated in the festivities.

The cloud of the Boston Marathon terrorist attack not only did not deter runners from the FIDV-5T5K but may have even given more attendees a reason to run and show their support.
A clear, crisp, chilly Sunday brought hundreds of sneakered men, women and children, some in strollers, some in wheelchairs, to the entrance of North Woodmere Park on Branch Boulevard, quietly waiting to start. A sense of camaraderie and a sense of purpose gripped the participants.

On Sunday, April 14, Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Rabbinical Theological Seminary (RIETS) and Yeshiva University’s Center for the Jewish Future commemorated the 20th yahrtzeit [anniversary of death] of “the Rav,” Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik zt”l, Torah luminary and YU Rosh Yeshiva, with a full-day learning program that took place in the Lamport Auditorium on YU’s Wilf Campus. Thousands attended in-person or followed the event online to gain insight into the Rav’s life and legacy through lectures, discussions and presentations given by his family and closest students.

An esteemed and influential force in Jewish education will be uniting with a new and different idea of learning this coming school year.
The goal of modernizing Jewish education to increase learning and decrease costs galvanized a group of Five Towns parents to form Tiferet Academy. It was to start with grades K and 1 under a plan known as blended learning. Beginning in the fall of 2013, the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach (HALB) will be absorbing Tiferet Academy into its student body, incorporating its principles of blended learning into the curriculum of HALB’s 1700-student campuses.
